Positive Behavior Programs
Honor Roll is a special accommodation awarded to students who reach certain academic goals throughout the year. You must be in grades 4-6 to be eligible for the program.
- Gold Honor Roll is awarded to students who receive all A's on their report card and demonstrate satisfactory citizenship (no N's or U's).
- Silver Honor Roll is awarded to students who receive all A's and B's on their report card and no N's or U's.
Report cards are given out each trimester. Students have three opportunities over the course of the school year to reach Honor Roll.
Saber Savers are small paper rewards that students receive for courteous playground behavior and helping in the cafeteria. Students may redeem Saber Savers for items in the Saber Shop student store.

ABC is Project Cornerstone's most popular program, with more than 2,900 adults reading to 38,000+ kids in over 127 schools. The ABC Program is a literature-based program addressing important issues like respect, tolerance, honesty, peaceful conflict resolution, taking a stand against bullying behaviors, and refusing to participate in gossip. Parent and caregiver volunteers read specially selected books then lead discussions and activities that help teach valuable lessons related to these issues.
The program's goal is to help school communities achieve the following:
- Create a common language and vocabulary about student respect and behavior expectations among all members of the school community — students, parents and caregivers, teachers and staff.
- Help students develop skills to handle physical, verbal, relational and digital bullying and to STAND UP if they see someone else being bullied.
- Increase the number of caring adults on campus so that all students feel that there is at least one adult they can turn to if they have a problem.
- Contribute to a positive school climate where every student feels valued and supported to achieve and thrive.
ABC Program Books
During the school year, 8 books are read, once monthly (skipping December and June.) The ABC program is a cumulative program spanning 3 years, so books are repeated every three years.

This is a National Drug Awareness & Prevention Program supported by Silver Oak through age appropriate activities and assemblies that encourage students to lead healthy, happy, and drug-free lives. Drug free messages are reinforced throughout the week via themed spirit days, a poster contest (with prizes) and special readings by the teachers. We encourage you to take this opportunity to discuss the topic with your kids as well.

Walk and Bike to School Week takes place in October. During this week all students who can, walk or bike to school—one day or each day. Can’t walk or bike to school? Students get to school early and do some laps around the track to earn the daily stamp. Throughout the week participating student's hands are stamped. The class with the highest participation for the week will be awarded the “Golden Shoe” trophy.
This year Silver Oak continues using the "Habits of Mind" curriculum as part of our students' social and emotional learning. Habits of Mind focus on helping create well-rounded students who are ready to succeed with any challenge or endeavor they encounter. There are 16 Habits of Mind that research states will support students in being successful with any challenge or endeavor they encounter.
You can assist your child by asking what they are learning during their "Habits of Mind" lessons, and by acknowledging their efforts to practice what they have learned.
During this 2020-21 school year, Silver Oak will focus on one of the following three each trimester:
- Managing impulsivity
- Remaining Open to Continuous Learning
- Responding with Wonderment and Awe.

16 Habits of Mind
Since each of us is unique, so is our name. Because our name is tied to our identity, we would not wish to have our names changed or mispronounced. When our name is changed or unintentionally mispronounced, it is a misrepresentation of who we are -- because our name represents our identity.
As our world becomes increasingly connected, cross-cultural communication increases. We interact with more people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, many with different languages and ethnicities. Having the ability to effectively communicate with others who are different from ourselves opens up possibilities for deeper understanding and friendship based on mutual respect. It is also an essential skill in the 21st century.
School is a community, which prepares our students to succeed in the global world. To be an effective member of this global world, we can model respect for each other in the school community by learning about each other’s stories, our unique names, and their proper pronunciations.
My Name, My Identity is a campaign created by the Santa Clara County Office of Education and its Multilingual Education Services team with the Curriculum and Instruction Department.At Silver Oak our goal is to
- Bring awareness to the importance of respecting one’s name and identity in schools as measured by the number of community members making a pledge to pronounce students’ names correctly.
- Build a respectful and caring culture in school communities that values diversity as measured by my name stories posted on social media.
Silver Oak students in kindergarten and grades 2, 4 and 5, participate in discussions led by the YWCA of Silicon Valley about topics of bullying and sexual abuse in an age-appropriate manner. The premise of the program is all children have the right to be safe and healthy at school and at home. The goal of this program is to teach young people in an engaging and age-appropriate way to recognize, resist, and report abuse. During the Child Abuse Prevention Program presentations, children are taught to use The Plan if they ever feel unsafe or unsure about something that is occurring in their life. The Plan has three steps: Say “No! Stop!”, Walk Away, and Tell Someone (like a trusted adult). The Child Abuse Prevention Program presentations run 35 – 55 minutes, depending on grade level. Silver Oak 6th graders participate in the YWCA of Silicon Valley's Teen Empowerment Program where they discuss the topics of bullying, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and teen dating violence in an age-appropriate manner. During Teen Empowerment Program presentations, tools are taught for staying safe such as: assertive communication, boundary setting, seeking peer support, and telling a trusted adult if students feel unsafe.
