How to Safely Reopen Schools in August
Posted 06/22/2020 09:00AM

June 22, 2020

Dear Evergreen Community;

Looking ahead to the 2020-21 school year, the Evergreen School District is excited about reopening our schools, while also prioritizing the health and safety of our staff and students. We have learned many lessons from the sudden school closures due to COVID-19 and are evaluating optimal ways to not only provide excellent instruction, but to also maximize student learning this coming school year. Clear expectations will be known and communicated, and our staff and teachers will be equipped with the training and resources to successfully deliver instruction in a variety of formats.

The District acknowledges that our community has a strong desire to plan ahead for the needs of students and families, classroom and school site needs, and to have certain answers sooner rather than later. Our goal is for our school reopening plans to be confirmed by the end of July.

I recently presented the Board of Trustees with foundational information about school reopenings, including the goals, and factors to be considered. That presentation can be found here.

Approaching how our schools will safely reopen will be determined by a process that includes parent, student, and staff stakeholder input. This commenced with the parent and staff surveys that were sent early this month, and will continue through the recently appointed Superintendent's Teaching and Learning in Safe Environments Advisory Committee, which is composed of parent and staff stakeholders This advisory committee has working subcommittees that will focus on specific areas of re-openings. This committee will have its introductory meeting this coming week, and will meet weekly through the month of July. The district is also planning community input meetings. Information about the committee and community meeting dates will be posted on the district website later this week. The Board of Trustees is charged with making the final decision regarding which approach the district will implement to schools reopening.

We will provide updates to our community throughout this process through the district website, social media, email, phone calls, and the district's "Evergreen Safe Together" webpage, which will be launched later next week.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or additional input about the school reopening process, please send an email,

Dr. Emy Flores
