Over the past 2 years here at Silver Oak we have been working with our students on Habits of Mind. There are 16 Habits that will help provide students with soft skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. To date, we have worked with our students on Listening with Understanding and Empathy; Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision; Persisting; Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations; Striving for Accuracy; and Managing Impulsivity. This year we will be staring off the first trimester focusing on Thinking Flexibly.
What does Thinking Flexibly mean? Imagine you're driving somewhere, and discover that a street you were planning to turn onto is blocked off for construction. Your initial plan for reaching your destination obviously isn't going to work. So you instantly come up with a new way to get there. That's what flexible thinking is about—being able to quickly switch gears and find new approaches to solve problems. Flexible Thinking plays an important role in how children learn and adapt to new information.
Thinking Flexibly will help students with seeing others perspectives, generating alternative ideas, along with considering other options when dealing with any situation. Our staff will be teaching specific lessons throughout the trimester to teach our students more about how to Think Flexibly. They will encourage students to demonstrate it in their classrooms and those who do a great job will be rewarded, and may earn Student of the Month.
There are a lot of resources on the web if you choose to explore, or you could ask your teachers or myself to help provide more information as well. I will be reviewing Thinking Flexibly with our students and at my September Parent Café on September 12th at 8:30am.
