Dear Families,


Welcome to John J. Montgomery Elementary the home of the Gliders!


Every year, the Montgomery staff and PTA strive to make Montgomery School a greater school and we are certainly moving in that direction. In the last two school years, we introduced music classes for all Kinder through 4th grade students, implemented a leveled reading program, established a full-day kinder program, implemented teaching in themes, SEAL program (Sobrato Early Academic Language) for kinder and 1st, instilled the asset building ABC Program, and moved in the direction to engage students in learning that fosters the development of 21st Century skills. I am proud of the staff for successfully implementing these ambitious initiatives!!!


For the 2018-2019 school year, we plan to continue moving forward with our vision of creating classrooms where students continue to develop 21st Century skills. Kinder and 1st grade teachers will continue to modify their teaching and learning programs through the 2nd year of SEAL, and we are pleased to announce that the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers will be joining in this effort. Upper grade teachers are in their second year of the unit design. Teachers integrate the different subjects (reading, writing, science, social students) by creating units of study meanwhile enhancing the learning environment where students can build on 21st Century skills- creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication. These new teaching and learning initiatives take a few years to fully implement, and please be assured that your children will continue to have more fun in the new learning approach as he/she builds those necessary skills. Not only do we focus on improving our academic programs, we also strive to build character skills where students are learning to be kind with each other and feel safe when at school.


As you can see, the Montgomery staff is committed to offering your child the best. We encourage all families to join us in this new exciting journey. Children need support in their education from all levels to be most successful so parents are always encouraged and needed to participate in PTA, ELAC (English Language Advisory Committee), SSC (School Site Council) and Project Cornerstone ABC Program.

School Office Hours

The school office will open Monday through Friday, starting Wednesday, August 15th from 8:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m. For general information please call during regular school office hours at 270-6718.


Student Placement

Class lists will be posted on the entrance windows at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21st. Volunteers will be at the front of the school Wednesday morning, August 22nd, to help your child locate his/her classroom. Please come to the school office if your child's name does not appear on the class lists.


Classroom Placement Using Parent Portal

On Tuesday, August 21st at 5:00 p.m. your child's classroom assignment will also be posted in Parent Portal under "My Schedule" icon in the left hand navigation box. Visit our new website at montgomery.eesd.org for other important Montgomery news.


Medications At School

All medications (including over-the-counter) given in school must have both a doctor's prescription and parent's written permission for school personnel to dispense medications. Medication release forms are to be filled out by the physician and signed by the parent or guardian before every school year. Forms are available in the school office. All medications must be brought to the office.


Minimum Days

Please be advised that all Thursdays are minimum days except for Aug. 23rd & Dec 20th. Please check the website routinely for updated information. Students in grades 1-6 will be dismissed at 12:45 p.m. Kindergarten at 12:30pm. First minimum day is August 30th.

Backpack Giveaway

Students can receive a free backpack donated from our partners from the Family Giving Tree Backpack Program. Please visit the school's website in August for more information on the date and time when the donation will occur.


Parent Portal

We continue to transition to the Parent Portal online system to collect emergency contact information and communication preferences. Please contact the office for information on how to use the system and for your access code.

School Arrival and Dismissal

The safety of all who attend Montgomery is of great concern to parents and staff. Therefore, I

ask your personal cooperation and commitment to observe the following school safety rules.

The parking lot will be closed from

7:45-8:15 a.m. and 1:30-2:00 p.m. daily and 12:30 -1:15 p.m. on Minimum Days. If you drive your child to and from school, please drop off and pick up your child at the curb or park on the streets and walk your child to the campus. Many families park cars on Camperdown Way which is the street next to the field. Eliminating the number of cars driving through the parking lot creates a safer environment for all. The parking lot will be utilized for school buses, staff, and handicap parking. Children SHOULD arrive at the school at 7:45 a.m. Supervision of children ends at 2:15 p.m. on regular days and at 1:00 p.m. on Thursdays. Children MAY NOT be on campus after school hours unless they are with their parent, under the direct supervision of a teacher, or involved in a school-approved activity.
