Portals Connect Bulldog Tech to the World
Posted 02/06/2018 10:02AM

The global public art initiative, Portals, has come to San Jose! Portals are gold shipping containers equipped with immersive audio-visual technology. When you enter one, you come face-to-face, live, full-body, with someone in an identical gold shipping container somewhere else on Earth. The San Jose_Portal will connect to countries around the globe, including Afghanistan, Australia, Germany, Honduras, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar, Palestine, and Rwanda.

The San Jose_Portal is at Bulldog Tech School, in Evergreen School District, until February 13.

"When students get into the portal and talk to people from all over the world, they recognize that they have a particular perspective, and that others may or may not share it," said Site Director, Randy Hollenkamp. "It is this new found perspective that will allow our students to be globally competent citizens that are better able to make a difference in the world. "

"For students to participate effectively in this changing world, they must understand it," adds Denise Williams, Director of Instruction with the Evergreen School District. "This portal experience has provided yet another opportunity for students, to cultivate their abilities to effectively share ideas and communicate across cultures in appropriate and respectful ways. This is a critical element in developing globally competent students"

More on Portals: Since launch in 2014, Portals have connected more than 85,000 people around the world in intimate, one-on-one dialogues. Prior Portals participants include Barack Obama, Ban Ki-moon, Haider al-Abadi, John Kerry, Samantha Power, Sergey Brin, Fareed Zakaria, Ewan McGregor and more. Sites include Herat, Kigali, Berlin, San Francisco, an IDP camp in Iraq, a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, and more. Global media has covered Portals including the New York Times, The Washington Post, ABC, PBS, FOX, and many more. Portals is a project of Shared_Studios, a multidisciplinary art, design and technology collective focused on carving wormholes across the world.
