TK-8 District of Choice

Important Announcement From Superintendent, Dr. Flores

Dear ESD Staff, Parents, and Community,

When I came to the Evergreen School District more than two years ago as your new superintendent, I was asked to address some challenges, which include: to close a $12 million budget shortfall and increasing community trust. While budget shortfalls are not easy matters, I knew that increasing trust would take a lot of heartfelt relationship-building and work. As superintendent, I welcomed this challenge because I knew that Evergreen is an incredibly special community with people who deeply care about their children and schools, and I wanted to get to know as many staff, families, and students as I could. And, it is because I have gotten to know so many of you, and what truly makes Evergreen such a special place, that it is so hard to say goodbye.

I will be moving closer to my family in Southern California and will serve as superintendent of schools for the West Covina Unified School District. I take many fond memories of Evergreen and will never forget your high standards for excellence in education, your care and love for our students, and your strength as a community.

The last two and a half years have been filled with extraordinary challenges, and I am so grateful to have had you as my partner. I am proud that, all along, we kept our students as our number one priority, and together, we have been able to move our school district toward an even brighter future. Our collaborative efforts have resulted in the following:

  • Improving district transparency and increasing communication and community engagement: Increasing our district’s regular and consistent communications has been critical, and providing multiple opportunities for staff and families to engage in ESD’s decision-making processes continues to be a priority. Through transparency, we have increased trust with our stakeholders.
  • Execution of measures to ensure the safety and health of students, staff and families:   In addition to strictly adhering to state and federal COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, our district has invested in on-site testing centers and has partnered with the county and local businesses to offer free vaccinations to our students, staff, parents, and community. The establishment and work of our district’s Wellness Team have kept mental health and parent support at the forefront of our district’s work throughout the pandemic.
  • Establishment of additional programs for students: More than ever, students across our school district have access to high-quality and engaging enrichment opportunities.  Our national award-winning Speech and Debate program continues to develop unique skills in our students that will benefit them beyond their elementary and middle school years. Our comprehensive and extremely fun Arts Enrichment classes are enjoyed by students of all grades, allowing them to express their creativity through a variety of artistic ways. The expansion of our computer science classes challenges our students' thinking, helping them develop programming skills they will use in our technology-driven Silicon Valley. Our newly-launched Dual Language Immersion program will provide students the opportunity to become fluent in English and Spanish and develop the skills they will need to compete in our globalized society.

I want to thank members of the Board of Trustees for the continuous support, our district Cabinet and Management Team members, our teachers, and support staff for being such an amazing team to help navigate our district through school consolidations, pandemic school closures, distance learning, and reopening our schools. You are some of the hardest-working, compassionate and caring people I have had the honor of working with. And thank you to our students and families who have taught me so much as a school leader; I am grateful for each lesson that I have learned from each of you.

We have so much to celebrate in the Evergreen School District. I feel so blessed to have been part of this community. I will greatly miss our students and their families and staff members who make this district a truly great place to educate children and to work. Thank you for entrusting me with your children, schools, and community for the past two years.
