Process and timeline for hiring new superintendent
Dear ESD Community,
First, I would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. May the upcoming days reflect your beliefs, your ability to gather as a family, and perhaps a time to remember those who cannot be here to celebrate with you.
I am also writing to share our process and timeline regarding the hiring of our next Superintendent, in light of the recent resignation of our current Superintendent, Dr. Emy Flores, who made this difficult decision to be closer to her family. We support her in this decision, given our district’s guiding vision, Family First, and appreciate all she has done to our community, especially to our students during her tenure.
Characteristic of Dr. Flores’s leadership, she will leave a roadmap that we can continue to replicate and grow, a direction to where we are currently heading, and identification of the unique challenges that lay ahead. Under her leadership and guidance, we can be certain of a smooth transition in January 2022.
The Board of Trustees will diligently spend the time to accomplish the tasks ahead, which include placing an interim Superintendent, embarking on a Superintendent search, and outlining the process for engaging our entire community in this process, and lastly, hiring the next Superintendent of Evergreen School District. We will communicate this process and opportunities for public engagement through our district website, email, and social media.
Selecting an Interim Superintendent: We are currently receiving interest from willing candidates to act as Interim Superintendent through the end of the 2021-22 school year. From these willing interests, we will choose up to three candidates to interview by January 5th. The final choice of an Interim Superintendent will be announced at the January 13th regular board meeting. This timeline will allow Dr. Flores to work with the chosen candidate prior to her departure in order to ensure a smooth transition.
At our January 13th meeting, the Board of Trustees will discuss publicly our intent on the process of selecting our new Superintendent. This process is one of the most important jobs of a school district’s Board of Trustees because the Superintendent is the sole employee of the Board.
Superintendent Search and Hiring Process: Our Superintendent search process will be similar to the search approach we used in 2019, which will include choosing a third-party search firm, gathering stakeholder input leading to statements of Evergreen School District’s expectations and description of an ideal leader. This search process will be transparent and will incorporate several opportunities for public input, including surveys, community forums, and of course, board meetings. Our goal is to hire the next Superintendent by June 1, 2022.
