There are two different types of substitute jobs: certificated and classified.

Certificated jobs are teaching and other positions that require a credential. Classified jobs are non-teaching positions that do not required a credential.

Certificated

Teaching and other positions that require a credential are called certificated positions, such as elementary teachers (TK - 6), middle school teachers (7-8), and special education teachers.

How to Apply

Submit the Substitute Employment Application.
Apply for a 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit or a Single/Multiple Subject Credential.
- Carefully follow the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) instructions linked above, and SCCOE will submit your Substitute Teaching Permit application to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) electronically. SCCOE will notify you of the recommendation and send you instructions to complete the process.

Schedule an appointment with ESD Human Resources by emailing careers@eesd.org.
- Bring your photo ID, social security card, and transcripts to the appointment.
Clear the Live Scan fingerprinting and Department of Justice screening at our assigned location.

Renewing Substitute Teaching Permit

Substitute teachers must renew their credentials no later than the last day of the previous month to hold a valid permit/credential.

Renewals can be made online at California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Once payment has been made, the credential will post on the CTC website within 8-10 days.
The issue date will be the date of payment.
If you have already renewed your permit/credential, make sure that your permit/credential is registered in the SCCOE/CTC database.
Expired permits/credentials may need to be processed as paper applications; they possibly may not be renewed online because they need to have their credential backdated.

Classified

Non-teaching positions that do not require a credential are known as classified positions.

This includes: Special Education Instructional Assistant (up to 6 hours), Transitional Kindergarten Aid (6 hours), Kindergarten Aide (2.5 hours), Front Office Secretary (up to 8 hours), Health Clerk (up to 8 hours), Child Nutrition Services (up to 5 hours), Day and Night Custodian (up to 8 hours), Noon Aide (up to 2 hours).

Classified substitute pay rate is based on hourly rate of the first column of the current year’s classified salary schedule.
