No school on Monday, Labor Day.  Labor Day, the first Monday in September, was created by the labor movement and is a tribute to the  contributions workers have made to the strength and prosperity of our country.  The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City.  In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, and the Central Labor Union encouraged organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate on that date. The idea spread, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

It was wonderful meeting with parents at Back-to-School Night.  I appreciate having the opportunity to meet everyone and tell you about our plans for fourth grade this year.  Thank you so much for coming.  I will post your conference time on the Class iCal.  If you signed up to volunteer, I’ll be sending home a Volunteer Agreement and a questionnaire next week and will work on putting together a volunteer schedule to post on the Class iCal.  It looks like quite a few parents would like to volunteer or Fridays, so I may need to have you come on alternate weeks.  I am very grateful for your willingness to help out and I look forward to having you join us.
This week’s main reading selection is The Adventures of Ali Baba Bernstein and the accompanying nonfiction piece is One Thousand Nights and a Night, the story of the Arabian Nights.  The vocabulary words for the main selection are:  policy, ranged, temporary, several, and frequently.  Vocabulary words for the nonfiction selection are: sultan, civilizations, Silk Road, and translation.  The reading strategy will be analyzing story structure.  The skill is identifying character, setting, and plot.  Grammar this week will focus on subjects and predicates.  This week’s spelling feature is the long “a” sound.  Assessments on the main selection, and on this week’s strategy, skills, and grammar will take place on Friday.
We will finish up Chapter 2/Unit 1 in Math this week.  There will be a test on Chapter 2 on Thursday.  The Unit 1 test will be given on Friday.
There will be a science test on  Chapter 3 on Tuesday, September 7th.  I have put up a study guide for Chapter 3 on this site.  Click here or on the link in the Navigation Menu at the top of this page to find out what will be covered on the test.  Students made a foldable study guide in class on Friday of last week and they were reminded to bring home their science books.
