News. . .

I hope you are having a great summer. My family and I will be visiting New York City from July 5 - July 11.

Thank you for all of the thoughtful gifts. We really appreciate your kindness to us. Stay tuned for some interesting links later this summer.

Are you interested in books for some summer reading? I have some links for choosing books. Make sure to choose a book that is not too easy or too hard. I use a method that my wife, Mrs. Conway, taught me many years ago. It is called the five-finger-method. If you are reading and you come upon a word or phrase that you do not understand, hold up one finger. If you read one page and you have already used up all five fingers, that book is probably too hard. On the other hand, if you have read four or five pages and you have not had to raise a finger, that book might be too easy for you. Two or three fingers will probably be just right for you.
I also like to pick up a book at the library or a bookstore because it has an interesting cover or title. However, if the author does not grab my attention in the first couple of pages, I will not bother with that book.

Links...

Leveled Book Lists - A wide variety of books can be found here.

Newberry Medal Books - The Newberry Award is given every year by the American Library Association for what they consider to be the most distinguished children's books published the previous year. Some past winners include The Giver and Number the Stars, both by Lois Lowry.

Middle School Summer Reading List - The editors of this website have searched high and low for new titles to entice even the most reluctant of middle school readers.

Have fun this summer, and please remember to come back and visit next year.
