Boundary Realignment Update

December, 2007

The Evergreen School District is facing disproportionate student enrollment that has resulted in overcrowding at schools in the southeast corner of the District and leveling or under enrollment at the others. At their June 2007 meeting, the Evergreen School District Board of Trustees directed the Superintendent to develop a recommendation for realignment of those boundaries to level out enrollment across the District.

This directive resulted in the formation of two committees that worked with District staff in the first half of the 2007-2008 school year to study current and projected enrollment numbers and boundaries. These committees included parent, community, teacher, and administrator representatives from the areas most likely to be affected by boundary changes. The first committee addressed the needs of the eastern side of the District and the second committee addressed the needs of the western side of the District.

Their recommendations are as follows:

Next Steps

As a result of community input, at their October 18, 2007 board meeting, the Board of Trustees directed that implementation of the boundary changes be postponed from fall, 2008 to fall, 2009 to allow time for district staff to review current registration practices, develop and implement a stronger practice for impacted schools, and verify the enrollment of new and current students at impacted schools. The community has also requested that the forums which were tentatively scheduled for January be postponed until after the enrollments at impacted schools are verified. Consequently, the community forums, which will provide the opportunity for wider community input on the recommendations, will be scheduled in early fall, 2008. Actual dates and schedules will be published on the website and in school newsletters.
