This elective uses math, science, social studies and language art skills in real-life situations to prepare students for their future. In art, students are taught techniques in drawing, sketching, and painting. A wide variety of art concepts are explored including lines, shading, perspective, color theory, portraiture, and cartooning. Within each area of focus, the students will learn how artists' masterpieces influenced the course of art history and reflected the culture and society of their times. Some of the mediums used are: paint (tempera, watercolor and acrylic), marker, crayon, color pencil, chalk pastel and oil pastels. Leadership is a student body organization with classroom representatives who must complete 20 hours of community service, pass out fliers, take suggestions for the school, and attend Student Body Meetings. The Computer Technology class is project based and tied to the curriculum at Chaboya. Students in the class have the opportunity to learn: word-processing, data bases, spreadsheets, and graphics tools. Students also create class presentations using Hyperstudio and Power Point. Research skills are enhanced by doing research on the World Wide Web. Students are taught curriculum that's in alignment with national technology standards for middle school students. This is a beginning class in metalworking. Emphasis is placed on how the knowledge learned in other areas (math, science, social studies, and english) is transferred and utilized in the industrial classes. Safe and proper use of hand tools, portable electric, and machine tools is taught through the construction of useful projects. Areas of instruction include bench metal, sheet metal, and oxy-acetylene gas welding. This is a beginning class in woodworking. Emphasis is placed on how the knowledge learned in other areas (math, science, social studies, and english) is transferred and utilized in the industrial classes. Safe and proper use of hand tools, portable electric, and machine tools (drill presses, belt and disk sanders, scroll saw and band saw) is taught through the construction of useful projects. Students should be able to assist in the construction and repair of many household projects at the completion of this class. Continued emphasis on how industry is influenced by the other areas of education as well as technology. In Metal, areas of instruction include: shielded electric arc welding, MIG welding, foundry, and forging. In Wood, there is a greater use of portable electric tools (routers and saws) and machine tools (jointers and lathes). In both classes the students can be more creative because there is a greater freedom of choice in projects and an increased knowledge of tools and materials. During the one semester class, the students learn language structure and vocabulary. The class uses two high school texts, Spanish for Mastery and Dime. The course is supplemented with videos, games, fiesta, and other activities designed to learn more about Latin culture and history. Spanish is the only academic elective at Chaboya that becomes a required course (foreign language) in high school. |
